Polygraph: poly = many, grapho = to write, measures subtle changes in heart rate, respiration, and/or perspiration. Polygraph and lie detection: polygraph does not measure deception, but such arousal can also reflect other emotions (e. g. , anger, fear, shame, guilt) Instead it measures physiological arousal often associated w/ deception. Some uses of polygraph: police investigations, treatment and monitoring sex offenders, not admissible in canadian courts (1987) Comparison question test (cqt: pre-test interview during which comparison questions are formulated, test, post-test interview. Irrelevant = neutral: relevant = crime-related, comparison = acts similar to event investigated; general, vague, cover long periods of time. Concealed information test (cit: probes for guilty knowledge rather than determining whether someone is lying, multiple choice format. Cit: guilty suspect twill recognize and respond more to crime-related choices. Cit example: the robber in this case dropped something while escaping.
