Document Summary

Self-concept: refers to the attitudes, behaviour, and values that a person believes make himself or herself a unique individual. William james: 19th century philosopher and psychologist, believed that the foundation of self- concept is the child"s awareness of their existence. This being studied to see when the child begins to recognize self in the world. Studies that have been created to test this is conducted by putting a red dot on a child"s nose without the child knowing. Then the child returns to the mirror, 1 year olds usually touch the red dot that is on the mirror. However, at about 15 months the child will see the red dot on their nose and touch their own nose. Almost all 2 year olds recognize that the dot is on their own face and reach up for their nose. Other tasks such as showing a child a photo of themselves and other children ages 18-24 months is when self-awareness usually emerges.
