Children adjust better to living with same sex parents. Lack of access to opposite sex role models. Limited role models, less opportunity to interact with a parent. Conflict rather than divorce is what leads of the harm. Joint custody when parents get along well. Adults who can separate parenting from their personal relationship. Consistent predictable access to the non-custodial parent. Access to a same sex and cross sex role model. Gain confidence in their ability to control future events. Expect children to be sad or angry at first. Compete with each other for love & attention. Take out anger with each other on children. Blended families (4:10 stepfamilies have children in common) 5:10 mother"s vs 1:10 father"s children only. Preadolescent boys tend to benefit from presence of stepfather, Preadolescent girls do not adjust to mother"s remarriage. Adolescence most difficult time to adjust to remarriage. Best strategy for stepfathers is to be interested, but not to interfere with established relationships.
