Helps organism adapt to environment (ex. figuring out a how to understand algebra) Accommodation- cognitive structures need to accommodate information they get from the environment. Stage 2 primary circular reactions (1-4 months), ex. sucking thumb (pleasurable actions) Stage 3- secondary circular reactions (4-8 months), ex. pushing duck toy to make it quack. Stage 4- combined secondary circular reactions (8-12 months), coordinating two actions, ex. put duck toy under a pillow. Stage 5- tertiary circular reactions (12-18 months), new methods for solving problems, ex. if i stand on duck it quacks, so i"m going to keep doing it. Stage 6- the first symbols (18-24 months), begin to internalize those mental images. Incapable of imitating novel responses until 8-12 months. Deferred imitations (18-24 months), mentally store an act and imitate at another time. Objects continue to exists, even when they are no longer visible.
