Psyc 2700 basic distinctions in memory systems: sensory memory, stm, & ltm. *all content belongs to jordan richard schoenherr & where cited in lecture slides* Modal model of memory: multiple sensory registers (auditory, visual, haptic, short-term store for rehearsal, long-term store associating info, has been shown to be problematic, but its simplicity helps communicate basic findings of memory research. Traditionally, visual sensory register has been postulated to have: large capacity, short duration (250ms, non-interpreted representations. Phenomena, such as after images = straightforward way to understand sensory memory for visual info: neurons continue to be active after event has ceased to occur in outside world, continued activation reflects memory . Material: diff set of letters and/or #s were used. Procedure: stimulus presented for 50 milliseconds (ms) w/ tachistoscope, after each presentation, participants wrote all letters they could recall on answer sheet.
