Psyc 2700 language: components, comprehension, and communication. *all content belongs to jordan richard schoenherr & where cited in lecture slides* Form of communication, whether spoken, written, or signed, based on system of symbols: sequential images can be used to communicate info (e. g. , egyptian & khmer relief, comics ) Communication systems enable info exchange: talking, reading, dog peeing on fire hydrant, monkey warning calls to other monkeys, bee indicating to other bees where good flowers are. In general, languages can be defined by 3 primary components (cohn, 2013; jackendoff, 2002: modality sounds, bodily movement, & visual/graphical representation, meaning abstract (e. g. , love) or concrete (e. g. , rock) meanings, grammar systems of rules that are used to constrain possible meanings of representational units. Hierarchical relationship proposed b/w 3 diff types of reference (e. g. , c. s. peirce, 1903: iconic, indexical, symbolic. Hierarchy based on progressively more abstract associations b/w sign & what it signifies. Examples of visual iconic representations include road signs, tallies, & emotions.
