Early theory was sexist (lombroso: overly focused on biology and sexuality breakdown relative to male theories. Many theories ignored fo"s and assumed a generalization with male theories. Reproductive tness variance: rewards and costs associated with mating differ for men and women. Risky behaviour for women enhances survival under conditions of scare resources. Resource scarcity is the main drive behind property and violent crime. Further victimization occurs (ex. on the street) Leads to crime in survival strategies (robbery, fraud, drug trafficking) Criticisms: based on only qualitative research, not disaggregated by age, no inclusion of male control groups (can"t say it"s unique, assumes uni-dimensional pathway, ignores female heterogeneity. Women"s liberation movement unintentionally pushed women into the economic margins. Increased divorce rates = single, female-headed households with dependent children. Women have increased expectations in regards to status and wealth. More likely to adopt illegitimate means (ex. prostitution) as a way to reach those expectations (supporting themselves and children, up their status)
