Document Summary

Can be mentioned in text but will be discussed in lecture. Researchers interested in cognitive development are focused on examining age-related changes in a variety of cognitive domains from infancy (or even earlier) through adolescence. Child also has physical, social, and emotional changes on top of cognitive development. Needs to happen as a body of research to get the full picture. Set group of children at different time points over a longer period. The processes or faculties by which knowledge is acquired and manipulated (text, p. 3) Cognition cannot be measured directly, only inferred by observation. Can"t look at someone and know that they are/aren"t thinking. We look at observable behaviour and make inferences based on that. If a child looks for object, they may have object permanence. They recognise that the object continues to exist despite not being able to see it. Psychologists study the mental factors underlying the observable behaviors. Helps us understand children and to foster development.
