38 views4 pages

Document Summary

Cognitive development is constructed within a social context. Culture is important -- it influences how one thinks and what one thinks about. Not fully determined but does affect it heavily. Vygotsky emphasized that development was guided by adults interacting with children, within cultural contexts. Heavy emphasis on social interaction (critically important) Bronfenbrenner focused on the interactions between an individual and their environment (multiple systems) 1) microsystem: the setting in which an individual lives, and includes the person"s family, peers, school and neighborhood. The child plays a direct role in these settings. Example: parents" attitudes toward the value of classroom activities. How much effort a child puts in, how much they care, etc all depends on the parents values and what they teach the child. 3) exosystem: is involved when experiences in a social setting in which the individual does not have an active role influences what the individual experiences in an immediate context.
