Document Summary

Follows a medical model approach in recognizing and treating physiological/neurological issues underlying mental illness. An important component of treatment as there is often an underlying biological component that cannot be addressed by talking therapies alone. However, medical treatment alone is usually not enough to treat mental illness thus, must be combined with a therapy that treats the person. Not just a mental illness, but also physical symptoms that accompany and drive the mental illness. The talking therapy may not be enough some clients. Might be necessary to have a quicker intervention until the talking therapy can instill some positive and efective coping mechanisms. Necessary for the clinician is to think of them of a whole person and have a balanced approach. Not as much research on herbal medicines or evidence on their eicacy. Electroconvulsive therapy: series of electrical shocks given to the client. Usually used for clients who are unresponsive to medication.
