Judaism: History Monday, May 1, 2017 8:11 PM Language: Avoiding Christian-centric terminology • BC-AD (Christian centric, common) vs BCE -CE (before common era, common era) • 1438 Islamic calendar AH (Oct 1 2016) • 5777 Jewish calendar (Oct 2 2016) • 2017 Christian calendar • Old Testament - Christian bibles begin w old testament, new testament attached, old testament is the bible of Jews • Hebrew Bible/Tanakh- not all Hebrew, terminology isn't technically accurate, torah only refers to first 5 books, tanakh acronym most appropriate, religious writings are never good historical writings • Who is a Jew? • Orthodox - Jewish mother, rabbinic law, genetic answer, doesn't accept conversion- accepts children • Reform -Mom or dad, open to conversion, conversion = Jewish • Is Religion different from Ethnicity? • Culturally, ethnically, religiously Jewish • Do Jewish history + history of Jewish People + History of Judaism all mean the same thing? Biblical Myth • Myth - sacred story whose sole purpose is to transmit values whose historicity is irrelevant • Stories told in real time - sound historical • Myth - George Washington - cherry tree, serves a purpose, honesty, integrity. Lie, but teaches a lesson. • Genesis 1-11 -Not stories that happened in real time, point is to give Jews answers to their questions. Who are we? How did we get here? Etiological myth. • Good, right, valuable. • Adam & Eve, Garden of Eden, Creation - explains the creation of the universe • The Flood - tells you not to sin • Tower of Babel- explains language Biblical Legend • Good, right, valuable. • Adam & Eve, Garden of Eden, Creation - explains the creation of the universe • The Flood - tells you not to sin • Tower of Babel- explains language Biblical Legend • Myths are story that probably didn’t happen in real historical time • Legends are stories that possibly did happen, but no evidence supports them • Starts at Genesis 12 • Abram/ Abraham and Sarah -God - unrealistic, Migration - realistic (no evidence) • Ur -> Canaan • C.1900-1700 BCE (if this happened this is when it happened) • 1st Parish • Canaan: • Abraham + Hagar = Ishmael • Abraham + Sarah = Isaac • Abrahamic Religion -Patriarchal Figure • Isaac -> Jacob/Israel- Israel = wrestles, strives, Abraham = father of many • God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob • The Three Patriarchs • The God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob • The Israelites in Egypt- descendants of Jacob/Israel, land they inhabit = Israel • Famine - leads Israelites to Egypt • Political change in Egypt = great kings -> Pharaohs. New enemies, friends. Sinai - Moses called to the top of the mountain, receives the law • Torah = Law -given by God, • Mitzvah + commandment, individual commandment within the law • Mosaic Covenant - treaty with God via Moses • Obey law for protection • Idol worship = wandering in desert for 40 years • Hebrews eventually end up in Canaan • Hebrews conquered Canaanites - dramatic, militaristic, powerful, involves God • Actually: happened very slowly, Canaan became Jewish • Canaanite gods: Ba'al and Asherah - Fertility Gods • Henotheism- loyalty to one God above others vs Monotheis-m yalty to one God because there are no other Gods • Jews in this period were not Monotheism, believed in the Canaanite God • Jewish God v Canaanite God • Joshua • 12 Tribes ruled over by "judges" - form of tribal government system Biblical History • Monarchy / Kingdom • First three Kings: Saul, David, Solomon • Saul - first king, killed by David • David (ruled c.1000 -960 BCE): • Most famous, loved king • Model king • Consolidation of the kingdom = Israel is a nation under a king • Peace & prosperity -unity, nationhood • Jerusalem - capital of Israel, jebusite c- not belonging to any 12 tribes of Israel • Solomon (ruled 960-21 BCE) : • Builds first Temple (completed c. 931 BCE) - David was not allowed to do this • Israelites - sacrificial religion, temple facilitates this, formed into a temple religion • Solomon renowned for his wealth, wisdom & international power • M
