Document Summary

Edward said wrote a book in the 1970"s called orientalism . He argues that the west understanding of the east was a fiction, something the west made up. He argues that the british, dutch, portuguese projected their problems onto others. He said that the orient was almost a european invention. His ideas have been expanded to other parts of colonialism. To be normative is to be like us. The best thing we can do for those other people is to rule them and make them like us. This will make them better (good, just like us). His argument is that this is was orientalism was. It was looking at another group of people as lesser and they need to be taken over. Said"s definition of orientalism: orientalism is an academic category; an orientalist is an academic who studies the orient, orientalism is a style of though which assumes a distinction between the orient and the occident .
