Social workers who intervene themselves in the lives of the child consider themselves experts. They tend to: universalize wisdom (they think everybody knows) child parenting, what the family needs, and they tend to assess rather than support the child. Social workers who follow the rogerian model: rather than helping they offer understanding, they meet with, rather than interview the child. The rogerian method can be used throughout the meeting with the child. Respect, empathy and congruence can weave through every gesture and word.
