Anomie: its a disjunction between institutional means and cultural goals. Term developed by emile durkheim, defined it as a state that is in conflict/ disorganized. Durkheim also talked about the anomic individual as a person who is at high risk for suicide. Believed that crime was normal in society, but what he recognized was the level of crime once it exceeds our ability to control it then it becomes abnormal. He came up with 4 different types of suicide: Durkheim saw that some people have higher likelihood to commit suicide anomic suicide - people struggle to fit in fatalistic suicide: occurs in gangs egotistic suicide: decision to take ones life altruistic suicide: sacrificing yourself to the group. Robert merton: -believes the way to achieve anomie is through adaptation.
