Culture: complex connection intertwined with various aspects, anything could be cultural. Material culture (physical objects) physical qualities of an object. Non material culture (ideas), morals, hospitality, religion, beliefs. Difficult to explain for those who do not share the practice. Culture both material and nonmaterial mix with interactions (environment, people) Informal norms are learned by sanctions (verbal and nonverbal), giving permission. How one understands and makes sense of the world through experience. Language as a culturally specific vehicle" categories of thought and forms of experience. Lost in translation- multiple meanings for one word. Language and colonialism- the language of the colonizer shapes the consciousness of the colonized. The hierarchical values and meanings of blackness" and whiteness" i. e racism. Racism and racist ideas are internalized (inferiority) Informal way of value and meaning are imported to one"s mind. Mixing of low and high culture/popular and elite culture. Smaller distinctive cultural groups within larger cultural groups.
