SOCI 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Grammatical Gender, Sex Assignment, Gender Role
Document Summary
Sex: sex is the biological characteristics of female and male. It is assigned at birth and is associated with physical aspects of a being. Gender: refers to the roles and characteristics a society associates with being male and female. It refers to the classification of sex and gender into two distinct, opposite and disconnected forms of masculine and feminine. Binary gender system is not universal, it is socialized into individuals. Gender role: it refers to the society"s expectation of how men and women should behave. These roles are based on norms/standards created by society. Eg: masculine roles are associated with aggression, strength and dominance while feminine roles are associated with passivity, nurturing etc. Role learning happens through socialization during one"s childhood years. Eg: dressing girls in pink and boys in blue, giving dolls to girls and cars to boys. Studies show that children will play with their gender-appropriate toys even when cross-gender toys are available.
