Canada is well ahead of the curve in civil rights. However there are many drawbacks: quebec never signed the constitution, first nations are still targeted. Identity is not at unproblematic as some people think. 3 challenges to construction of self-identity: post traditional social order: people have no choice but to construct identity. We have a natural desire to be individuals. 2)pluralism or fragmentation of life-worlds: construct different identities depending on which situation we are in. identities divided against themselves. 3)experience is mediated: reliance on social networks to build identity.
