Midterm exam in class worth 20% (all scantron and multiple choice) Social stratification: systematic process of categorizing and ranking people on a hierarchy of social worth such that ones ranking effects life chances in unequal ways. Life span, education, job all effected by social stratification. The criteria used in stratification is based greatly on status (ascribed and achieved status) Individualistic society we believe that if you don"t try you wont get, that if you work hard you"ll get what you need. Social prestige: level of respect or admiration for a status, the level of respect ex. Social value: people possessing one characteristic are regarded or treated as more valuable than people who possess a different characteristic. Two main forms of social stratification (conceptualizing social stratification) Caste system- people are ranked according to ascribed status ex. Class system- people are ranked according to achieved status.
