Things that are against the law but are not deemed to be socially deviant. Law: a law is a norm that is made and enforced by government. Symbolic interactionist: stigma: when people are stigmatized, they are negatively evaluated by a marker that distinguishes them from others, when people are stigmatized they are are negatively evaluated, stigma (the idea of wounds). Stigmatized (something that is becoming more popular and people are becoming aware of): Participation in deviant or criminal behaviour involves a learning process in a social context: howard s. becker"s 1963 study of marijuana users illustrated the role of learning (to produce effects, to recognize effects, to enjoy the perceived sensations) Functionalist: durkheim argued that deviance in crime can be bene cial to the society. When someone break the rules, it gives the larger body ability to punish those who committed the crime: often protestors are criminalized.
