Document Summary

Pre-requisites: soci 1001 & 1002 or soci 1003. Although people have contemplated the nature of human society and culture throughout history, modern conceptions of social organization can be traced back to the 18th century. Questions about society and culture and the theoretical concepts developed to address these questions in the 18th and 19th centuries are still the same basic questions and concepts employed by sociologists in the 21st century. It is essential for an understanding of the discipline to be knowledgeable about the roots of these theoretical questions and concepts. Often the question is asked, of what relevance are these old thinkers and their work to current social issues and problems. This course in both its format and approach seeks to demonstrate that classical theory continues to be relevant today for a number of reasons. Course objectives and outcomes: to engage with the primary texts that led to the development of sociology as a discipline.
