Addiction i theories of addiction: debate re: whether certain diseases are moral judgments vs pure diseases, ex. addiction, hiv+, aids vs cancer. Critiques of the studies: drugs provided in unlimited iv quantities, environment was stripped of all that was meaningful to the animals. Initial animal studies examining cocaine self-administration revealed that: drug usage is sensitive to the context in which it occurs, environments that are stripped of all meaningful activities promote drug seeking. & elevate the significance of the drug experience to the point of obsession. 3 major theoretical approaches to addiction: neurological theories, learning theories, sociological theories, each approach captures important features of the addiction process but suffers from important limitations. Pleasure centers & addiction: when animals" responses on a switch produced electrical stimulation in the brain"s septical area, the animals responded as frequently as several hundred times per hour to keep the stimulation going.
