SOWK 2001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Eurocentrism, Age Appropriateness, Lawrence Kohlberg
Document Summary
Developmentally appropriate practice the provision of strength based supports that meet both the individual and developmental needs of the child. Darwin"s thinking about infants was not dissimilar from that of most parents of his time who likened infants to little bunnies, chick and kittens. Infants were objects to study rather than subjects. Constructed children as undeveloped persons: stanley hall was one of the first professionals to study children in a laboratory. Lawrence kohlberg said that children were either good or bad and that they feared punishment if they were bad. Urged mothers to stay home and help children meet their milestones. Children already think in those 4 ways, they have pre natal and post natal memory. A western cultural belief that bias reflects a perspective of privilege and dominance. Regression: a term that again implies that all child development is linear and aimed at reaching childhood. A child sucks their thumb once they are done breast- feeding from their mothers.
