Idea that you should question who you want to be. Idea that people can easily be labelled which is socially constructed. Not a synonym for gay and lesbian studies . Calls into question idea that there is a norm or that identities can easily be categories. Draws attention to the ways in which power is linked to socially constructed identities. Should allow people to live out who they want to be themselves. Used in a variety of disciplines to challenge categories and essentialist thinking. *walcott reminds us that queer spaces can also be normative (centred on a white subject) Debate regarding the use of the word queer .
