Week 5 program evaluation, health literacy & social marketing: health literacy. Experience difficulty asking doctors to explain language you don"t understand. Declines w/age, not practicing skills, low formal education, lack of knowledge about health, English as a second language, cultural beliefs, living w/ a disability: system barriers. Schools = difference in education philosophies b/w provinces, shrinking budgets, inadequate teacher preparation/professional development on health-related topics, lack of teacher specialists in health, insufficient support for public health engagement with schools. Workplaces = health safety/lifestyle programs not available in all workplaces, health & wellness programs limited in scope, limiting ability of workers to attend due to way work is organized. Enables people to take control of their individual/collective health. Enhances effectiveness of health programs/services (only effective when they reach priority populations) Nutrition info, educational pamphlets, internet, instructions from hcp, instructions for medical tests: levels of health literacy.
