1962, service : established the typology of different types of political systems that have existed: bounds, tribes, chiftums(?) and states. These types, however their simplistic they may be, can be correlated with mdoes of subsistence and adaptive strategies because political life cannot be removed from socio-economic life. Bands are mainly found amongst foragers, tribes amongst pastrolasists & horticulturalists, chiftums = agriculture (in middle east, many chiftums dependent on their herds for survival) and non-industrial states were found in association with agriculture. World"s states coloured by form of government as of april 2006. Politics is associated with the exercise of power. Philosopher michel foucault says that power, in and of itself, does not exist. He said something called power, with or without a capital letter, which is assumed to exist universally in a concentrated or diffused form, does not exist. Power exists only when it is put into action" (p. 219). Coercive power involves the use of force against someone.
