Document Summary

Flow in the laboratory: purpose: to examine the effect of choice & competition on elements of the flow experience, method: 60 undergrad students were assigned to 1 of 4 experimental conditions. Crisis of confidence = the creation of a setting/environment in a laboratory is too fictional/fake. Example of an experiment in a laboratory (in the textbook) High level of freedom & high level of competitiveness = more flow. Leisure behaviour inventories are long lists of different activities; which respondents are asked to indicate whether/to what extent they participate. Weaknesses of inventories: no standard list or grouping methodology thus difficult to compare studies, do not consider subjective meanings of activities. More often, a behavioural-observer approach is used. Ex: work, domestic activities, personal care, leisure, etc. The idea that you can still use a time diary but adding subjective data. Can be quantitative (frequency of participation, numbers of activities participated in) Generally qualitative (interviews, participant observations, focus groups)
