A bid is any expression that shows others that you desire to feel connected to them. A response to a bid is a person"s positive or negative reaction to someone"s request for emotional connection. A high rate of positive engagement can have many positive side effects: a greater access to expressions of humor, affection and interest during conversations, greater ability to draw on the reservoir of good feelings when in conflict. Having access to humor and affection during a conflict is helpful because it helps de-escalate problems and leads to better understanding. Bids happen in simple, mundane ways and it is often easy to overlook them. People who do not recognize bids have greater conflict in their lives. They feel lonely and isolated and become upset at people close to them for not satisfying their emotional needs. Frequent bids allow for more opportunities to connect, which creates a higher potential for creating satisfying relationships.
