Chapter 3: cultural competence and adaptability, microaggressions and their effects, diversity wheel. Acknowledgement of how biases shape and frame our thinking and makes us defensive. Mixing, mingling and relating with friends of other cultures. Opening up services that relate to a broader category of people, cultures. Biases become active when meeting new people and being faced with diversity. Conscious, deliberate and either subtle or explicit racial, gender, or sexual orientation biased attitudes, beliefs or behaviours that are communicated to marginalized groups through environmental cues, verbalization or behaviours. Interpersonal and environmental messages that negate, nullify or undermine the experiences, feelings and realities of marginalized groups. Subtler than micro assaults, interpersonal and environmental messages that convey stereotypes and biases towards marginalized groups. Showing kids what to do (imitating the animals), doing one thing at a time, patience, organizing activities, being prepared with other activities to keep the group entertained. Orientation away from the self and more towards family, friends, vocation and society.
