Document Summary

Human relations is the study of organizations manage and interact with employees to improve effectiveness. Before the hawthorne studies, money was used as the main motivator. Now we realize that people are motivated by meeting their needs. Need -> motivation -> goal directed behaviour -> need satisfaction. We all have 5 needs that need to be met according to their hierarchy before the next level may be achieved. Once a need has been met it is no longer a motivator for behaviours. Caused many managers to reexamine their policies and practices to help people reach self actualization. How can we meet the needs in the workplace: Physiological: bathroom break, proper bathrooms, not insane work hours. Love and belonging: team building, positive work environment, social activities. Self esteem: recognition, possibility of growth, training, etc. Self-actualization: let them be part of the decision, share.
