Document Summary

Statocysts are the organ of equilibrium in invertebrates. They are hollow, fluid filled cavities lined with mechanosensory neurons. Movement of statoliths stimulate mechanoreceptor cells with send a signal to the nervous system. What are the two ways that insects hear: trichoid sinsilla. Katydids have a tympanum that is connected to leverlike structures which are connected to an inner fluid filled chamber. The chamber contains mechanosensitive cells that are functionally similar to the mammalian ear. K+ channels open and allow ca2+ in when cilia tilt towards kinocilium. Neuromasts are structures that can detect water movements. They consist of hair cells embedded in a gelatinous cap (cupula). They are found scattered over the body or in the lateral line system. Three semi-circular canals with enlarged region at one end (ampulla) The lagena is an extension of the saccule. It is extended into a cochlear duct or cochlea for hearing.
