Document Summary

What are the six possible mechanisms of interspecific interactions proposed by t. Consumption: occurs when one species inhibits another by consuming a shared resource. Pre-emption: competition occurs when the occupation by one individual precludes establishment by other (eg. sessile organisms) Overgrowth (plants: occurs when one organism grows over another and inhibits access to an essential resource (eg. light) Involves the production of chemical growth inhibitors or toxins released by an individual (eg. allelopathy in plants) Territorial: competition results from the behavioural exclusion of others from a defended territory. What is the lotka-volterra model of competition: competition results during non- territorial meetings, eg. scavengers fighting over a carcass. Lotka and volterra independently arrive at mathematical expressions to describe the interaction between 2 species using the same resource, ie. competing population. Both began with the description of the growth rate of two populations coexisting independently. Is per capita competitive effect of species 2 on species 1.
