As you learned in the last chapter, there are two basic types of software on your computer. Application software is the software you use to do everyday tasks at home and at work. System software is the set of programs that helps run the computer and coordinates instructions between application software and the computer"s hardware devices. From the moment you turn on your computer to the time you shut it down, you are interacting with system software. System software consists of two primary types of programs: the operating system and utility programs. Operating system (os): the operating system coordinates the flow of data and information through the computer system by coordinating the hardware, s oftware, user interface, processor, and system memory. Real-time operating systems (rtos) also referred to as embedded systems, require minimal user interaction. Therefore, there are no commercially available standard rtos software programs.
