Document Summary

Managers are often torn between (cid:498)strong(cid:499) and (cid:498)permissive(cid:499) leadership. Range of behavior: the degree of authority used by the boss and the degree of freedom available to the subordinates in reaching decisions, extremities: maintaining vs. releasing a high degree of control; however, neither is absolute. Behavior points: the manager makes a decision and announces it. The manager identifies the problem, considers solutions, chooses one, and announces it to their subordinates. The opportunity to participate in the decision-making process is not given to subordinates: the manager (cid:498)sells(cid:499) his decision. The manager takes the additional step of persuading their subordinates to accept the chosen solution. The purpose of this is to reduce any possible resistance the manager knows may occur: the manager presents ideas and invites questions. The manager seeks acceptance and invites questions in order for their subordinates to achieve a better understanding of the decision.
