Address principles of human dev, phys dev of brain and possible implications for teaching. Piaget and vygotsky (sociocultural perspective) - very influential in cog dev. Development - changes that occur over a rather long period of time, and in orderly manner (certain skills emerge before others - but orderly not necessarily linear) Includes growth & maturation + often follows typical sequence. Ex babies often crawl for while before walking. Inds dev at diff rates - ex one may start walking at 11 mo vs other baby at 16 mo. Ex when start walking, may be unstable and gradually become more coordinated/stable. Cog dev - changes in the way an ind thinks, reasons, learns & acquires knowledge over time. Some argue that genetics determine who we are & how we behave vs others = envs + day-to-day exp that shapes us.
