Document Summary

Open video with shaw ur previous lesson provided an overview of the major categories of training you will encounter in an organization. In this present lesson, we focus in more detail on management development. The rationale for this is that management development is a complex and costly proposition. Owing to the critical role that effective management plays in organizational success, and the many-faceted nature of management work, a disproportionate share of training dollars are allocated to management development. Our text begins with a review of the different elements that comprise management work, and the various competencies that are required. Following this exploration of management work, different models for management development are presented, and management and development programs are described. Note that the word development is conspicuous in this chapter. Improving managerial performance is a developmental process that is dependent on experience and education.
