Motives have personal logic of her own. Desire to control and manipulate proves ineffective, social context behind desire makes her tragic. Has a desire to manipulate others as a result of her unconscious world of goals that govern this behavior. Gets what she wants what she wants isn"t what most people would admit to desiring. Her character implies that there is a secret/unconscious world of aims and methods (a surface, justification for actions), hidden layer of justification/desire that governs our behavior. Shunned as a play when it first came out, denounced character as a demon in human form. Woman portrayal of a woman in a relationship w/o love, potentially betray husband. Not domestic or stereotypical, threatening to dominant social order seen as negative. Values gives gun to his child. Picture of him, military man, values law and technology (gun) Connection between hedda & father, the world her father belongs to is an outdated world.
