Ireland political history of strife, land invasion, land conflict, which is mirrored in the setting in the carpathians in transylvania. Crosses several borders, train gets slower and slower, doesn"t sit easily in characteristics. Gothic novel: castles, dark rooms, monks/nuns, anxiety about catholic religion. Protagonist usually female and her safety is at risk, sense of dread. Gothic novel mid-1700s, switch to industrial revolution, age of enlightenment (rationalism over spiritualism), cultural reaction.
