Semantic; surface elements [location, what we see & hear, images] Ex, words, what we hear is semantic, syntactic is the grammar ex a comma can change the whole meaning. Can be used to explain hybrid genres ex. The syntactic of one genre mixed with the semantic of another. The most durable genres are one with most coherent syntax (western, musical) More transient ones rely mainly on recurring semantics (caper ex james bond, catastrophe, reporter) not a clearly structured syntax. Ex horror the monster used to be unhuman, and then became a psycho-sexual in nature ex. In psycho, not as obvious from the deep sea, but a person (a mind) Semantic to the western; a film whose action is situated in the american west, consistent atmosphere, values & conditions of existence in the far west 1840-1900. Syntactic to the western; west as a garden and as a desert, between culture & nature, community & individual, future & past.
