The key, or core, of this definition is the idea of surprising and disturbing change. We may like it, we might not but the city has the potential to shock us we never know what is around the next corner. Chicago"s population grew from under 30,000 in 1850 to 500,000 in 1880. Although the city is overcrowded with people, they are trying to create new spaces and new jobs for people. It is a shock city of the periphery. Unplanned and irregular growth, with natural setting restricting efficient development. The population growth has far outstripped the city"s capacity to deal with the daily movement of people. Rem koolhaas spent many years in lagos. The city of lagos (nigeria) operates as a shock city of the present day. Creating new spaces for people to function. By people spotting new spaces to function. It has grown from 60, 000 in 1968. Dubai is described as the shock city of the 21st century.
