Frederick law olmstead designed central park and mountain in montreal. People complain that urban problems due to lost contact with nature. Working class youth and immigrants create gangs. Solution was to create a central park to provide escape from city, provide peaceful environment, and allow upper classes to cruise in carriages and imitate european fashion at the time. These places provided lower classes a way to learn how to behave from higher classes, set example. Public space brings society together and reduces conflict. Panopticon: efficient design where guard could observe perfectly. Prisoners don"t know that guard is there or not. Shopping centers, modern day police and highway patrols, you don"t see cameras or authorities. People are isolated from each other but authorities see them. Part of social control of authorities is the data collected on individuals. Schools, prisons, shopping centers, factories and hospitals all employ panopticon.
