Protection from feudalism and greater diversity due to capitalism. There is a mixture of people and a mixture of ideas. Giovanni arrighi: there are systematic cycles of accumulation. Genoese cycle (15th-17th century): northern italian city/states dominated. Trips financed by genoese banks (to find trade routes to east) Were dynamic centers of trade and were financed by genoese. Invent first stock exchange and found the most successful company (could buy public shares). Mercantilism: alliance between state and merchant company. Dutch are accumulating a lot of capita and can start accumulating more by financing british. British take over and start over accumulating and then start financing. But underneath there is some violence because of military powers support capitalism. No dynamism, low productivity, no implementation of mass production, no division of labour, machinery and equipment. Dramatic technological advancements, division of labour, gains in productivity. City doing one job: production of most other goods.
