Lecture 8: when net radiation is negative, surface cools. Opposite when it is positive: there are secondary and still significant controls on air temperature of diff locations. Different heating properties of land and water. Latitude: temperature decreases as we move from low latitude to higher latitudes. And this is because the insolation is less intense as we move polar. We also know the noon rays migrate only between tropic of cancer and capricorn. Polar of these 2 tropics, the noon sun is never perpendicular to the surface. The more polar we go the lower the noon angle is. The length of time through the years when net radiation is positive, is shorter the polar we go. On a global scale, if we average it through the years, net radiation is positive between about 40 degrees north latitude and 40 degres south latitude.
