1987 azt adopted as hiv treatment [ first & only treatment for nearly a decade ] 1996 haart triple combination to slow hiv. 1999 nevirapine to limit vertical transmission. 2005 recommendation to delay treatment regime [ long term effects of treatment become evident ] 2006 bc centre for excellence in hiv/aids introduces tasp [ treatment-as-prevention ] 2010 recommendation to start treatment early. 2012 fda approves truvada (prep) introduced for cancer in 1964 meant to stop cancer cell division [failed too toxic] Virus identified in 1983 azt reintroduced to stop hiv division. Still very toxic and difficult to take. Hard to say whether people who took azt shortened their lifespan or not has been. The most expensive prescription drug in history suggested. At the time the pills required different points of the day with specific instructions ex. Initially a very complicated regimen simplified now to single pill once a day with food, etc.
