Conflict of interests: situatio(cid:374) i(cid:374) (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h a(cid:374) i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual"s pe(cid:396)so(cid:374)al i(cid:374)te(cid:396)ests appea(cid:396) to i(cid:374)flue(cid:374)(cid:272)e the exercise of his or her official responsibilities. Advance directives: written statements made while the patient is competent for use at a time when she is no longer competent, stating what medical treatment would (or would not) be acceptable to her. Morality: a formal system meant to generate co-operative behaviour and regulate interpersonal social relations through practical action guidance and conflict resolution. For now, perhaps the best way to understand morality is with an analogy: morality is the (cid:862)g(cid:396)ease(cid:863) that allo(cid:449)s so(cid:272)ial (cid:396)elatio(cid:374)s to o(cid:272)(cid:272)u(cid:396) (cid:449)ith as little f(cid:396)i(cid:272)tio(cid:374) as possi(cid:271)le. Morality must provide a means to resolve the conflicts that inevitably will arise. All human beings are self-interested, egoistically inclined individuals with strong psychological and biological drives that motivate us to stay alive and succeed in life.
