Document Summary

It is what is necessary to have in order to have a functioning society. Justice makes society possible; it is a pillar that holds everything together. On the surface, we live in a society of consent when we vote, when we decide who rules us, etc. But we are also somehow coerced peer pressure, threat of ostracizing them (the ones who are different, to make them fit). Socrates and plato would represent the same person/one and the same. Plato puts (cid:449)ords i(cid:374)to (cid:373)ouths; he does(cid:374)"t lea(cid:448)e roo(cid:373) for legiti(cid:373)ate argumentation. Plato is sneaky because he isolates the negative arguments. Athens and piraeus = where the dialogue is taking place, the people there are from different areas and is not as homogenous as athens is. This place where maybe plato and socrates feel they can ultimately challenge the athens political system. Athens is a democracy; men who own land can participate.
