Variety of economic, territorial, moral issues led to civil war. 1793: cotton gin machine increased demands for slaves. 1860: 6 million whites in slaveholding, 7% of them owned slaves. (even after abolished slavery african americans still lived in slavery conditions) 19th century compromise between slavery and a free state. 1803- louisiana purchase causes u. s territory doubles. South carolina threatens to secede from union. Precedent for a state to secede has been set. 1803: louisiana purchase causes us territory to double in size. Mid 1920 slavery was a big issue. States that are free slaves ran away to free states. Law required that all citizens, in both north or south states had to return a fugitive slave to their owner. Underground railroad helped to help slaves flee southern states. California applies to be a free state. New mexico and utah decide slavery issue through a vote. A slave files a lawsuit to be declared a free man.
