Mahallat al kubra: city outside of cairo; first time egyptians burned pictures of. Before nasser, mohammed naguib; he was divided with nasser about the militarisation of politics. Naguib wanted gradual demilitarization, whereas nasser was more radical; saw centralized power in military, and centralized presidency. Nasser: egypt under the monarchy was divided in the parliament, which was a source of corruption and lack of governance; multiplicity and decentralization was bad. Rules with an iron fist, total militarisation; it is very intrusive. They are in charge of investgating if someone was in the opposition. It also played a main role in government. Changed in 1967: nasser and amer (chief military) diverged over the role of the military. He demiliterized politics, and presidency becomes the center of politics.
