Galen was a physician for gladiators and was an anatomist. He sketched and described animal bodies and dissections. The cerebellum is noticeably stiffer in touch than the cerebrum because it is so compact. Correlation between structure and function: he deduced that differences in appearance predict differences in function. Hydraulics control started the idea that the brain pumped fluid throughout the body. Descartes believed that the soul was entirely separate but connected to the brain.
