Left side of visual field gets processed on the right side of the brain, and vice versa. Had strokes in v1 on both hemispheres cortically blind: eyes are fine, but cannot process anything from inside the cortex. However, he was remarkably good at moving in space (even without a cane). When asked why, he said he didn"t know why he was moving around obstacles. Patients with this have been shown to detect: simple shapes, object appearing or disappearing, movement, color, orientation of lines facial expressions/emotions. Lgn keeps information from each eye segregated by using different layers. Info travels from right side of each retina to right lgn contralateral = left eye. Signals from lgn to v1 remain segregated and then form ocular dominance columns. What striate cortex comes from = striped appearance of columns.
