Anxiety Disorders
1. Anxiety Disorders (e.g., Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Generalized
Anxiety Disorder):
a. Highly prevalent:
- The 12-month prevalence for any anxiety disorder is over 12%
- ¼ of Canadians will have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime.
b. Highly comorbid:
- Study:
i. Procedure:
1126 patients with anxiety diagnosis.
ii. Results:
55% had at least one concurrent additional diagnosis.
76% had at least one lifetime history of additional diagnosis
iii. Discussion:
Psychological treatment targeting one disorder leads to
improvement in comorbid anxiety and depression symptoms
(e.g., treatment of panic results in an improvement in
depression and GAD).
2. Types of Anxiety Disorders:
a. Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder):
- Involves:
i. Hypersensitivity to criticism and rejections
ii. Low SE, feelings of inferiority
iii. Restricted vocational and social achievements (but just because
you’re ervous durig a oral does’t ea you have social
anxiety)
iv. 3-13% prevalence
v. Impairment of daily life functioning
- Example of reinforcement learning in social anxiety:
i. Social anxiety leads to avoidances which leads to a reduction in
anxiety
Theory for the Cause of Anxiety:
1. Learning Theory:
a. Different types of learning:
- Non-associative learning:
i. Includes:
Habituation
Sensitization (i.e. over time, little is needed to produce a
response)
